This conversation\, organized in partnership with the Louis Armstrong House Museum\, considers the importance of an artist’s archive\, and how it can be used as a tool for legacy building as well as a touchstone for expansive creativity. What does it mean for artists to create archives? How can we inspire and support artists to keep their archives? In answering these questions\, the discussion attends to how archival practices are a critical component of contemporary art. \nThe panel is bookended by listening sessions of recorded music and interviews inspired by the Ailey and Armstrong legacies\, drawn from the Louis Armstrong House Museum’s sixty-thousand-piece collection. \nSpeakers  \nAdrienne Edwards\, Engell Speyer Family Senior Curator and Associate Director of Curatorial Programs\, Whitney Museum of American Art\nJoy Bivins\, Director\, Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture\nRegina Bain\, Executive Director\, Louis Armstrong House Museum URL:https://www.louisarmstronghouse.org/event-details/the-artists-archive/ LOCATION:The Whitney Museum of American Art\, 99 Gansevoort St\, New York\, NY 10014\, New York City\, NY\, 10014\, United States ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://lahm.sfo3.digitaloceanspaces.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/06195234/Collage-Workshop-at-the-Whitney-2.jpg END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=UTC:20250112T113000 DTEND;TZID=UTC:20250112T123000 DTSTAMP:20251106T104709 CREATED:20241220T071039Z LAST-MODIFIED:20241230T124229Z UID:10000048-1736681400-1736685000@www.louisarmstronghouse.org SUMMARY:Armstrong Now! Artists of all ages are invited to join us for a day filled with creativity\, music\, and fun as we explore themes of improvisation\, experimentation\, and play facilitated by our very own Charanya Ramakrishnan. \nDid you know that Louis Armstrong was also a prolific collage artist? Using photographs\, letters\, promotional materials\, newspaper clippings\, and more\, Armstrong created vibrant works of art on the walls of his home\, in scrapbooks\, and even on over 500 reel-to-reel tape boxes\, which are now part of the Armstrong Archives. His innovative approach to collage mirrors the improvisational spirit of jazz\, connecting music and visual art in unique ways. \nAlvin Ailey\, a longtime friend and collaborator of artist Romare Bearden\, once said\, “There’s so much music in Romie’s work.” Bearden’s artistry extended into the world of dance\, as he designed sets and costumes for Ailey and others. In 1979\, Bearden created the Bayou Fever series of collages\, hoping they would inspire a dance choreographed by Ailey. While that dream was never realized\, these stunning works are now on view in Edges of Ailey. \nCelebrate the synergy of art\, music\, and movement at the Whitney—brought to life in collaboration with the Louis Armstrong House Museum! \n  URL:https://www.louisarmstronghouse.org/event-details/collage-with-the-louis-armstrong-house-museum/ LOCATION:The Whitney Museum of American Art\, 99 Gansevoort St\, New York\, NY 10014\, New York City\, NY\, 10014\, United States ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://lahm.sfo3.digitaloceanspaces.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/06195238/Collage-Workshop-at-the-Whitney-1.jpg ORGANIZER;CN="Louis Armstrong House Museum":MAILTO:rsvp@louisarmstronghouse.org END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=UTC:20250111T150000 DTEND;TZID=UTC:20250111T160000 DTSTAMP:20251106T104709 CREATED:20241213T235031Z LAST-MODIFIED:20241213T235031Z UID:10000047-1736607600-1736611200@www.louisarmstronghouse.org SUMMARY:Marcus McLaurine - On the Road with Clark Terry DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Louis Armstrong Center Jazz Room for an unforgettable performance by bassist Marcus McLaurine\, a jazz powerhouse who has played with legends like Dizzy Gillespie\, Kenny Burrell\, James Moody\, Lou Donaldson\, Cleo Laine\, and the Count Basie Orchestra. \nFor 30 years\, Marcus toured with the legendary Clark Terry\, an experience that profoundly shaped his career.
